Designed and led a mixed-methods study of how Tibetan Buddhist monastic communities in Nepal use, perceive, and govern persuasive digital entertainment technologies.

• Conducted 20 interviews and 72 surveys across three monastic communities; built and piloted a bilingual survey instrument and interview protocol.
• Analyzed qualitative data in MaxQDA and produced a bilingual public report for participant communities; see ryismartphonestudy.com for more information. Findings currently being prepared for submission to an information-science or STS venue.

Working as first author with Dr. Daniel Susser on a philosophy-of-technology paper analyzing the preliminary ethics and governance literature regarding large language models’ influence on users’ beliefs, decisions, and self-conception.

• Synthesized roughly 50 sources across AI ethics, philosophy of mind, and behavioral science into a structured literature review distinguishing epistemic, behavioral, and identity-related issues related to LLM influence.
• Posited that AI-ethics frameworks built around identifiably “persuasive” interactions capture only a fraction of how LLMs actually shape users, with most influence occurring during everyday information-gathering and creative pursuits. Preprint planned for release September 2026.
